I Got It From Her

Macaroni and cheese is one of the happiest pasta dishes I know. It’s one of my family’s favorites.  I’m gushing just thinking about their grins around the table.  But more than that, this recipe always makes me think of my mom — because I got it from her.

My cooking gene is not the only thing she deposited into my life.  She also gave me her middle name, Ann. From reading her bible daily to serving in church with a smile, Mom gave us a legacy of love and service.

But eleven years ago, her last day on earth ended abruptly.

One outpatient procedure and three days later, Mom was gone. The woman who birthed me into this world and prepared me to walk wisely upon its sod, left to go home to be with Jesus.

But she left me with a lot.

Loving your family and friends ferociously.  Yep, I got it from her.

Knowing that nothing comes into a closed fist.  I got that from her too.

Now that I’m a mom, I often think of her love, lessons and sacrifices. She didn’t make living a good life look easy; but she made living a good life look possible. Mom gave me a major possibility through the words of a song.

She shared the melody as I prepared to leave home and fly into adulthood — literally.

She and my dad drove me to the airport.  Mom must have sensed my trepidation about leaving the nest.  During our drive, she began to sing these words:

“If Jesus is with me I’ll go anywhere.

Tis’ heaven to me, wherever I be, if he is there.

I count it a privilege, his cross to bear.  If Jesus is with me, I’ll go — anywhere.”

Whether or not you know the tune, I hope the words capture your heart.  I’m no longer able to sit at the table where I grew up and eat my mom’s signature dish.  But I am able to live out the words of one of her signature songs.

Although I got it from her, I know it was the Spirit grabbing my attention.  I hear each word compelling me to know Jesus intimately — until I exude the confidence built by being in his Presence.  Then I can go anywhere.  In his strength, I can do anything.  I can carry the privilege of carrying my cross daily. (Luke 9:23)

Consider the legacy you have or the one you want to leave. No matter what you have in your sights, I pray you sense God’s love.  He rejoices over you with singing. May even the faintest hint of his majestic notes bring hope for the heart and joy to the soul.

For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness.  With his love, he will calm all your fears.  He will rejoice over you with joyful songs. – Zephaniah 3:17 NLT
