As I pulled into my driveway, the shifting shape in front of my garage looked ominous. My imagination quickly gave it a name.

Was it a racoon on its way to the nearby garbage can?

Maybe a large cat wanted to out-maneuver me on the way to my front door.

Perhaps a giant suburban-dwelling python was preparing to strike.

Under the cover of night, all I could see was constant movement with no sound. But I needed to go inside my house. Walking backwards and further to the left of the “shape,” I decided to make a run for my front door.

With the sound of the door slamming behind me, I yelled for my husband to investigate the threat outside. With his usual level of valor, Brady went to the driveway (with a valor boosting broom).

I stood back on the porch. I steadied my heart to rush in and fight off a racoon or to call 911. Moments later, Brady emerged with the culprit in his hands. It was a large black trash bag.

It was empty. Yes, that’s right — large and empty.

Billowed by the evening’s strong winds, the bag took various shapes and scared me into running from what was harmless. It was meant for the trash but it was stuck in my mind.

My typical walk to the front door only requires my keys. But that night, I needed something more.

Courage.

Bravery is only required when something big is standing in my path. Big plans, huge hurts or mounting fears are the usual roadblocks.

And each time I see one, I flinch.

While some of my concerns are valid. Many of my fears are just like the trash bag, large and empty.

However, thanks to my driveway experience, I’m starting to see would-be dangers differently.

No matter how big the opportunity or obstacle, I see an invitation from God.

So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most. (Hebrews 4:16 NLT)

Just how bold do you have to be to come before His throne?

Be bold enough to believe.

While “boldly” emphasizes the welcome in His invitation, His mercy and grace stand ready to greet us however we arrive. They stand ready (without a broom) to help when and how we need it the most.

If the big plans are His plans, God supplies what’s needed for their fulfillment. (see Jeremiah 29:11)

The huge hurt is a magnet for His power to heal. (see Psalm 34:18)

Mounting fears are His foe and in His Presence, they must fall. (see Psalm 34:4)

As we come boldly before His throne, holy confidence is built. As I prepared to run to my front door, I said my go-to prayer in times of distress:

“Lord Jesus help me!”

He did.

Becoming more courageous has little to do with me being more in control.

In fact, when I am in control, bravery stands in the distance.

However, courage is being willing to face the big things in life, knowing God is in control.

Is there a big plan, huge hurt or mounting fear standing between you and the door to His will?

Its shape may change with each turn of your imagination, but it doesn’t change the fact that Jesus is the Champion. (see Hebrews 12:1-2)

It doesn’t change the fact that His grace is sufficient.

As we trust Him, we’ll see Him emerge victorious in every battle and we can walk safely into His will. That’s not an empty promise. It comes packed with blessed assurance offering hope for the heart and joy to the soul.

So be strong and courageous, all you who put your hope in the Lord! (Psalm 31:24 NLT)
