The coronavirus or COVID-19 gained global attention several weeks ago. As its flulike symptoms ended in fatalities, concerns deepened. The world watched as the virus leapt from continent to continent. It shrunk the distance between us in a matter of days.

I should note, I don’t have the disease or its symptoms.

However, as I see how the virus impacts the world, I want to make sure it’s not infecting my faith.

Statistical data, precautions and quarantines are part of the daily news cycle. Some may ponder why now and why this. Undoubtedly, there’s a scientific reason — which is not my expertise.

But since we live in a fallen world where sin and disease run rampant, I know God is at work on our behalf — in spite of this.

“The Lord is good to everyone. He showers compassion on all his creation.” (Psalm 145:9 NLT)

He’s comforting the grieving (Psalm 34:18), healing the sick (Isaiah 53:4-6) and calming the quarantined (Romans 8:38 and 39).

He’s moving in ways I don’t comprehend and offering peace to all who seek Him. (Philippians 4:6 and 7)

Fear and worry remind us of our human frailty. But faith in Christ always reminds me of His redemption. I rely on His care and His wisdom as I do more handwashing and navigate through public spaces.

A recent trip to the grocery store brought all these things to mind. I bought tried and true disinfectants and a few items that might grow scarce over time. Somewhere between putting cleaners in my cart and trying to avoid the cookie aisle, I realized fear repellent was missing. I didn’t find that in the store. I had to look in God’s word:

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” (2 Timothy 1:7 NLT)

With opinions mounting, new facts emerging and politicians posturing, I pray we avoid hysteria in the midst of legitimate concerns. Vulnerability looms whenever there is a threat to personal or public safety. But the possibility of fear is not just limited to a virus.

Any stressful circumstance can sound an alarm in my heart and wait to see if fear or faith shows up.

The disinfectants I purchased remind me of the need to detoxify my thoughts. There’s a difference between staying informed and becoming engulfed by a bunch of scary “what ifs.”

But because of who God is, I continue to pray for a miracle and some measure of containment. As we turn to Him, He heals our land. (2 Chronicles 7:14)

I pray those who are resistant to faith would seek God as they desire to be resistant to COVID-19.

After all, God’s power is more powerful than the virus.

“You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples.” (Psalm 77:14 NIV)

I aim to be in tune with where He’s at work. It may happen where and when I least expect it. But I don’t want to miss what He desires to take place in my heart.

Because a heart that rest in Christ, can rest from the cares of this world.

Since God is in control, I’ll continue to pray for leaders across the globe as they seek to keep communities safe. But I know a closer look at God’s promises and a greater dependence on His power, will surely keep a virus from infecting my faith.
