I’m a word girl. From listening to music to reading a book, what is said says a lot to me. But apparently, I’m not alone. According to Proverbs 15:23, “Everyone enjoys a fitting reply; it is wonderful to say the right thing at the right time!”

This may not surprise you. But I don’t always hit the right mark.

When I speak (out loud or in print), I aim to be honest, informative, and encouraging. And yet, during an awkward moment or a creative crisis, my words land far from perfect.

In some cases, I find a 3-word sentence leads to a better landing. Here are just a few.

It takes time.

This is beautiful.

I appreciate that.

I am sorry.

We should pray.

You may have some 3-word phrases of your own. And yet, as I reflect on Jesus dying for my sins, these 3 words changed everything — “He is risen” (Matthew 28:6). An angel spoke the words to two women. Grief-stricken and duty-bound, the women made their way to the tomb. They thought they’d find the Savior. But much to their surprise, God made a way for us all. Now the whole scene makes me wonder.

How often do we approach situations solely based on what we think or feel? All the while, God longs to reveal who He is and what He does.

The angel’s words were more than the right words at the right time. In fact, he said more than 3 words:

Then the angel spoke to the women. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead, just as he said would happen. Come, see where his body was lying. And now, go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and he is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there. Remember what I have told you.” (Matthew 28:5-7 NLT).

Time and eternity must have sat up and took notice. Once the women saw the empty tomb, they went and told others. It all led to them seeing Jesus, who is the Resurrection and the Life. (see John 11:25) But the news of His resurrection was not just for His followers back then. It is for anyone who wants to follow Jesus today: “…for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us” (Romans 8:34 NLT).

What a comfort to know Jesus is praying for us. He always uses the right words at the right time. His death paid for our sins. But His resurrection brings us new life.

It’s the kind of life we all need. Because at some point, we’ve all failed to hit the right mark — doing what is right in God’s eyes. But through Christ, we have some amazing 3-word sentences. They are promises we can cling to. Here are just a few.

God loves us. (John 3:16)

We’re never alone. (John 14:16-17)

We’ve been chosen. (1 Peter 2:9)

We are forgiven. (Romans 5:15)

We can rise. (Ephesians 1:19-20)

I hope one of these sentences spoke to you at just the right time. If I’m honest, I need them all. But whatever has our attention, may it lead to a deeper faith in Christ. His Word is more than words. They offer us eternal life.

Are you wondering about your faith and eternal life? Here is a suggested prayer:

Dear God, Please forgive me for how I have failed to do and say what is right in Your eyes. Thank You for Jesus Christ who died for my sins and rose from the dead for my victory. Today, I put my faith in Jesus as my Savior and Lord. Today, I cling to Your promises. Help me to follow You completely. In Jesus’ name, amen.

  1. The right words at the right time is important and people have to understand the message or else there is no point in saying them. As King Solomon wrote, “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.”

    1. Hi Lucille! Thanks for bringing Proverbs 25:11 to this discussion! It also came to my mind while writing this post.

  2. Loved this today, Joy! And yes, 3 words are sometimes all it takes, to soothe our weariness, our fears. I love “God is good.” So simple, yet so true and so comforting. In this world with so many voices, loud and so opinionated, chaotic, it is so comforting to just say or pray 3 simple words, “God is good.” May you and your family rejoice in the quietness and stillness of the words that “He is risen.” Those three words are my strength and my hope. Have a most glorious Easter, sweet friend!
