Growing A Friendship Series,  Lessons I've Learned (so far) Series
We can get by with a little help from our friends. But sometimes circumstances are dire and the assistance required is substantial. In Mark 2, a crippled man is unable to move. Perhaps he’s unable to speak. But he’s carried to Christ by his friends. "...Soon the crowd overflowed from...

Lessons I've Learned (so far) Series
As I attended a mentoring luncheon, one apparently talented, but tearful high school senior approached the microphone. She asked the mentoring panel, “Tell us what to do – those of us who want to pursue the arts. All our parents talk about is how they want us to be doctors,...

I’m pleased to have my friend and fellow blogger, Karen Foster, share what’s she’s learned about love in today’s post. Her heartfelt words encourage me. I pray they encourage you too. Thanks Karen! “I love you, but…” Has anyone said that to you? For me, instead of owning the love,...

When Loss Begins to Linger

Lessons I've Learned (so far) Series
I’m praying for those who lost loved ones due to recent violence and natural disasters. Sadly, loss comes to us all. Then it begins to linger. Owning my despair acknowledges the magnitude of my loss. But if I deny my despair, eventually it owns me. Years ago, when my mother...

Lessons I've Learned (so far) Series
“I’m more interested in looking at life, than looking away.” – Toni Morrison This is one of my favorite quotes. It resonates with the writer in me. But it stirs the truth seeker in me because where we look is where we learn. If I look away from life, there...

Growing A Friendship Series,  Lessons I've Learned (so far) Series
Where I live, work and worship are integral to my routine.  My neighbors and I trade hellos. Coworkers and I meet deadlines. I share hugs and a hymn with fellow church members.  But in each case, the people would show up whether I was there or not. Because fellowship forms...

In Difficult Times,  Lessons I've Learned (so far) Series
Portuguese lessons were a perk at my preschool. Decades ago, the few words I spoke impressed my older siblings. They marveled as I grew interested in something other than my dolls and my new puppy. I was far from fluent. But in time, my foreign vocabulary and my confidence began...

Lessons I've Learned (so far) Series
My dad wore the smell of smoke like a business suit.  He was a firefighter.  As he battled the flames that threatened people’s lives, he brought the fumes of his heroism home. Before his death two years ago, I asked what made him successful through 28 years of service.  I...

As the year draws to a close, I’m reflecting on my As the year draws to a close, I’m reflecting on my one-word. Alignment. But aligning with God’s will is a lifelong process of following Christ’s teachings by putting His will above my own. After all, alignment involves making adjustments so that something functions optimally within its intended design.

Surprisingly, my one word was both an invitation and an illumination. In my last post on the blog this year, I'm sharing lessons learned and the inspiration I found by God's grace. I pray you'll find encouragement in "5 Ways to End (or begin) the Year with Joy!" (Link in profile)

Is there something you’re counting on this Christm Is there something you’re counting on this Christmas?

Maybe you’re hoping for some time off work.

Perhaps you have travel plans or guests are traveling to spend time with you.

Some people are hoping to have a simple celebration.

And yet, others are busy preparing for festivities that no one will forget.

But for the Christ child’s parents, Mary and Joseph, what may have felt like a complication was really God’s invitation for them to experience His plan. (Luke 2:1-7)

Hence, the Advent season is more than a countdown to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Because He came, God no longer counts our sins against us as we receive Christ’s salvation. (2 Corinthians 5:19-21) There’s something to be sure of. But the Advent also points us to remember Jesus is coming again. (Matthew 24:23-31) This Christmas, may we each experience Him in the ways we need Him the most. #Advent #Christmas #christmastime🎄 #liveyourjoystory #joytothesoul
This crystal cross hangs near the top of our famil This crystal cross hangs near the top of our family Christmas tree. It’s a reminder of the reason for the Christ child’s birth. Redemption.

But as much as I love Christmas, I also remain amazed at how there’s so little I can be certain of from year to year. Between our news feeds, and the ups and downs of our hopes and dreams, it may be tempting to keep our expectations low. But the reason for the season is also the reason for great certainty.

It's the latest topic on the blog, because there is something we can be sure of this #Christmas!🎄 #joytothesoul #liveyourjoystory (Link in profile)
