Welcome to Joy to the Soul Summer! This annual series encourages us to find delight through our faith in Christ in the uniqueness of the sunniest season.

When I think about my travel plans, a beach anywhere will do. Where is your go-to destination? Finding an ideal spot on the globe or in your community can be its own adventure. If we’re looking for exotic locations a travel website may be a good place to start.

But in my walk with the Lord, I’m constantly learning more about the power of a place. It’s not just about where we spend our time, it’s also how we experience those moments. For example, consider your sense of purpose, longings, adventure, closure, and enjoyment. From a spiritual perspective, this acronym for PLACE gives us points of reflection for spending time in the presence of God.

I’m not suggesting we abandon our favorite vacation spot. But whatever “place” we’re in, there is nothing like being with the Faithful and True Refuge.

“That’s the only quiet, secure place in a noisy world, the perfect getaway, far from the buzz of traffic” (Psalms 27:5 MSG).

But the buzz of traffic is not just the noise from commuters at rush hour. Some days, it’s the anxious thoughts racing through my mind. Maybe there are “what ifs” and “what now’s” creating noisy traffic for you, too.

And yet, spending time with God is not about escaping reality. It’s about being real with Him about what’s happening in our lives. (See Psalm 62:8)

“For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock” (Psalms 27:5 ESV).

David, the writer of this verse, knew the benefits of earnestly seeking God. And yet, David also knew that finding shelter in the Lord didn’t mean David would have a trouble-free life. Instead, God provides security and blessing in the midst of trouble. This brought tremendous comfort to David. It can be a comfort to us too.

Even if we’re unclear about our purpose, we can be confident about God’s plan. (Ephesians 2:10) 

When our longings become our ache, God longs to give us His rest. (Matthew 11:28-30)

If we’re looking for a new adventure, God loves revealing who He is. (Psalm 25:4-5)

When we need closure to move forward, God shows us our next step. (Proverbs 3:5-7)

And if enjoyment feels elusive, His joy is our strength. (Nehemiah 8:9-10)

The Lord’s joy reminds us that we never need to settle for less because God will always give us Himself. There is no clearer proof than Jesus, God’s Son, who gave His life for our sins. (John 3:16)

This summer, you may see breathtaking views. Maybe you’re sitting on your deck, relaxing in a café, or wrestling with a decision.

But no matter where we are or how we are, the perfect getaway awaits us in the presence of God. It’s the best getaway for the soul. It can happen as we say a heartfelt prayer. Our words may not sound pretty but they can be honest. We can listen to praise and worship music and let the lyrics stir our love for our Savior. As we meditate on a favorite Scripture, we can embrace the truth that sets us free.
