A wing-man (or wing-woman) is a person who supports someone else on a potentially dangerous flight mission.

I don’t have a pilot’s license, but I’ve had a few “dangerous missions” (at least they seemed so at the time). I’ve navigated through relationship drama, career decisions, financial upheaval and several other endeavors. Each one involved some level of risk and required support.

When it comes to developing courage, thriving in difficulty or embracing the will of God, I’ve yet to meet anyone who can do a solo act. We may need varying degrees of encouragement, but we all need help.

"Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble." - Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 NLT

Who encourages you to be fearless? Who offers you a shoulder to lean on or provides godly counsel?

In other words, who’s on your wing when life gets tough?

My flight buddies and I exchange prayer requests. We cheer each other on and celebrate God’s goodness in each other’s lives.

However, depending on the circumstances, sometimes flight buddies are scarce. Particularly, if we’ve yet to leave the “no-fly” zone.

But whether our companions are many or few, Jesus is much more than our wing-man. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. As we accept His mission, we can cling to this promise:

“… nothing can ever separate us from God’s love — neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow …—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8: 35-39 NLT

When we realize we never walk alone, our next step is to learn how to FLY. It’s quite a faith adventure, filled with hope for the heart and joy to the soul.

  2. I have learned to not put much faith in men, because they can disappoint me. However, I have learned my wingman is Jesus Christ, who will never disappoint me!

    1. Hi Darlene. I understand your sentiments. We are always safe as we put all of our trust in Christ!
