At Christmas, I love getting greetings in the mail from family and friends. One card began with familiar words. “Peace on earth and goodwill toward men” was scrolled in metallic gold across a midnight sky. The beauty of the image is a bold statement.

God’s grace is a sharp contrast to the darkest days of our lives. However, the moment Christ was born, peace came to calm humanity’s fears.

Goodwill shined all around us all because Jesus came. He was born of a virgin. He came to die on a cross for our sins and be raised from the dead for our victory. (Luke 1:26-35 and 1 Corinthians 15:3-4)

As I opened the Christmas card, seeing the sender’s signature made me smile. But reading what was inside the card made me look inside my heart. The message said BELIEVE. I see the same word on t-shirts, mugs, and store displays. But what we choose to believe about God at Christmas brings more than holiday cheer.

We live in a world where peace can feel scarce. Headline news cast doubt on humanity’s desire to know God or His goodwill. But as we believe the babe in the manger is also the sinless Savior of the world, His peace and His goodwill becomes an integral part of our lives. No wonder the angels made this declaration:

โ€œGlory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!โ€ (Luke 2:14 ESV)

But without faith it is impossible to please God. (Hebrews 11:6) Now the greeting card feels more like an invitation. If we receive Christ’s redemption, being forgiven of our sins and having fellowship with Him brings us continual joy.

Because when I believe Jesus, it changes my worries into my chance to trust in His love and His power.

It changes my desire to hold a grudge against someone into a willingness to forgive them.

It changes any guilt or shame that I feel into gratitude for His grace and mercy.

I believe. And yet, sometimes walking by faith is a struggle. But walking by faith is always possible, when I believe I never walk alone.

Hence, “believe” is the last theme in the “7 Ways to Focus on the Joy of Christmas” series. We can choose to reflect, receive, adorn, give, anticipate or gather. But each focus comes to its fullness as we choose to take God at His Word.

I hope your faith is strong today my friend. But if you’re in a tough season, be encouraged. Many factors may change how we view this Christmas. But what we believe about Jesus changes everything.

PRAYER: Dear God, I believe Your love was Your reason for giving Your Son for my sin. I believe Jesus still saves and forgives. He still gives peace and goodwill to every soul that clings to Him. As I deal with life’s difficulties, there is victory in His name. Lord, I believe. Help me with any unbelief. May I continue to abide in Your presence and receive Your joy in my soul. In Jesus name, amen.

JOY TO THE SOUL: โ€œGlory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!โ€ (Luke 2:14 ESV)

  1. Thank you, Joy, for the Christmas series. I enjoyed it, even during this unusual season of life. Helped me to get into a better frame of mind.

I know what you mean about metallic gold against the midnight sky as I see and study the La Palma volcano near the Canary Islands in Spain. It is one thing to see the red lava, yellow sulfur come out of a dark mountain. It is another thing to experience it. My guess is that Micah 4 comes to fruition, where we read the following,

“…for pangs have taken thee as a woman in travail. Be in pain, and labour to bring forth, O daughter of Zion, like a woman in travail…”

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours!

    1. Thank you Lucille! I’m glad you enjoyed this series. Peace and blessings to you and yours!

  2. I agree with you, Joy: “But what we believe about Jesus changes everything.” May I believe all the right things to worship him wholeheartedly in spirit and in truth.

    1. Hi Lisa! I agree with you too! “May I believe all the right things to worship him wholeheartedly in spirit and in truth.” Yes and amen!
