gold and white analog watch

As the pace of life quickened several months ago, I felt the need to slow down. My current bible reading plan is a chapter a day. It allows me to linger longer with Christ on the shores of Galilee. I can pause and see His priesthood in action in Hebrews.

I’ve done faster paced plans and enjoyed digesting larger chunks of Scripture. But my current plan allows me to lean into God’s Word without seeing unchecked boxes for additional reading out the corner of my eye.

My box-checking heart doesn’t like to see the unfinished. And yet, I’m aware there’s much to be done in me.

Clearly, we’re each a work in progress. But if we patiently yield to God’s work in us,

Finishing is better than starting. Patience is better than pride. – Ecclesiastes 7:8 NLT

Progress calls as I go through the New Testament this year. However, every five days, my app-driven reading plan drives me to a blank page. It’s a not so subtle announcement that it’s my turn.

It’s my turn to reflect on the verses I’ve previously read.

It’s my opportunity to praise the Author of life who sits with me.

It’s a space for me to be honest about life as I know it — the unbelievable, the unraveled and the unchanged.

It’s my appointment with the undone.

What would you do with your turn?

The beauty of a divine appointment is that it can happen any time or anywhere. In the seemingly inconsequential moment, the overwhelming challenge, or the satisfying accomplishment, God meets us where we are.

Even if we dread what is incomplete or in shambles about our lives, completely bringing the fragments of our soul before God invites His intervention.

The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. – Psalm 28:7 NIV

Some days I want to leave the blank devotional page from my bible app blank (and to be honest, some days I do). However, Jesus knows what should be there.

He knows we each have appointments with the undone. We might not have a journal, a devotional time or a daily planner, but it’s likely we each have incomplete, but often avoided tasks or talks intended to make our lives more livable.

It’s the uneasy conversation that can turn into a bridge between differences.

It’s the tough decision waiting for wisdom to lead the way.

It’s happens when the burdens we carry take us into the Presence of God.

As I contemplate His goodness in the midst of my apprehension or procrastination, moments of clarity appear. God loves for us to know more about Him.

Of course, the Bible is always a good place to start. Its truth speaks to our circumstances, so our lives can be changed. Therefore,

We each have definitive niches in time, beckoning our attention.

They may be uncomfortable and inconvenient, but they hold what is required to fulfill our potential. My blank page welcomes me to spend time in reflection and gain much-needed closure.

I’m finding these โ€œappointmentsโ€ are not solely based on what I want to do or even what I’ve failed to do. They are about what God longs to do. And He longs for each of us to have hope for the heart and joy to the soul.

  1. A chapter a day is a good idea. this gives you time to think about the true meaning of your reading. Allowing God to speak to you in this way is a blessing!

    1. Hi Laurie! Yes, the chapter a day has been a good pace for me in this season. Here’s a link to the plan, in case you or others are interested: Discipleship Journal’s 5x5x5 Reading Plan
