When you ask God for help, do you wonder what will happen next? I do. I’ve wondered a lot over the last few days. I’ll leave out the details. But trust me, the last few days have been hard. And yet,

In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears. – Psalm 18:6 NIV

Knowing my cry reaches God’s ears is comforting. I know I’m not the only one. Countless voices call. Each request approaches His temple bolstered by the faith to call out.

With my cries heard and little strength left, I looked at my situation. I wanted to focus solely on God, but my pain kept getting my attention.

However, as my wondering slid towards anxiety, I remembered the words of my great aunt, Lorayne. Whenever I tried to figure out how or when God would move, she’d say, “That’s God’s business.”

Aunt Lorayne passed away years ago, but her words continue to give me peace and perspective on His Sovereignty. She’d declare her wisdom with a slight chuckle, as if to remind me how and when God moves is already settled.

As I try to figure things out, my way may be short-sighted, but

As for God, his way is perfect: The Lord’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him. -Psalm 18:30 NIV

I’m grateful for the life I have. But unlike Him, my life is imperfect in many ways. However, in Him I find refuge. Spending time in His presence recounting His faithfulness or reading the Scriptures, quiets doubtful chatter and fearful thoughts.

As God moves in mysterious and magnificent ways, I’m glad part of “His business” is for us to experience Him one moment at a time.

In some moments I stand strong in my resolve to trust Him. Other times, I can barely catch my breath. The last few days, have been messy. But God was there for it all – strengthening my resolve and resuscitating my faith. He still is.

Thankfully, God reveals His ways through His Word. I find solace in several New Testament examples. I find grace.

Let’s look together.

As a father waited for the return of a rebellious son, grace kept his son and reminded him where he really belonged. (see Luke 15:11-22)

As a blind man cried out for mercy in the streets, grace turned plain dirt into a miraculous cure. (see John 9:1-11)

As a chronically ill woman crawled through a crowd, grace put the hem of Christ’s garment well within her reach. (see Matthew 9:20-22)

In each biblical example, the complexity of emotion swells. The urgency of the moment tests the response of the Savior. He rises to the occasion. Every time.

It’s His business.

He saves souls and sets things right.

God may not send whatever makes our lives implode. But as we cry out, it helps to remember

When God allows something painful to touch your life and mine, it’s accompanied by His power to heal the hurt, redeem what’s lost and restore what’s broken.

As He goes about His business, I may feel like I’m going under, until I remember He loves me and He is in control. Then I find peace.

It’s the byproduct of knowing He is moving in the most evil-conquering, grace-exploding, truth-transforming ways.

I’m still learning how to rest in the power of His sovereign activity.

I’m growing as His Word walks me through my pain and takes me straight into His purpose. Because whether we’re at peace or in turmoil, through Christ we can find hope for the heart and joy to the soul.

  1. I love the idea that He can turn the most brokenhearted “whatever” in our lives into the most redeemed! That helps me to “settle down” when life gets really difficult. BTW, my middle name is Joy so I feel like we are good friends already!

    1. Hi Esther! “He can turn the most brokenhearted ‘whatever’ into the most redeemed” – now you’re blessing me! Thank you! By the way, it’s nice to share the “joy” in our names. 😊
