“Lord, give us faith so big that we walk out of every comfort zone and safe, faithless space, even when it’s painful.”

– Liberty Jones, singer and songwriter

This prayer cuts me to the core and carries me toward transformation. It’s part of the #Pray30Now series on tauraglaze.com.

Hearing the phrase “safe, faithless space” made me gasp with the feeling a malicious mystery was solved. Knowing its name was a relief, but I wondered about its damage.

I like feeling safe — in my home, with other people and as I go about my daily routine. However, the world is laced with danger.

I see it when the trust factor in a relationship plummets or when a “breaking news” headline brings bad news.

Every inclination to exercise caution feels right.

But as I desire to walk by faith, my inclination for the ideal life meets God’s intentions for a Christ-dependent life.

Hence, the prayer from the songstress got my attention. Matthew 8:26 was her inspiration, as Christ responds to His disciples’ panic during a storm.

Jesus questions the size of their faith. Then He shows them the size of their God.

He wants to show us too.

He calls me out of my comfort zone daily.

I hear His call to trust Him with who or what I treasure. He whispers words of wisdom when I fall for foolish things. He shows me where He’s working and invites me to join Him there.

In Matthew 10:39 NLT, Jesus puts it this way:

Loss of life on any level is unthinkable. However, Christ tells us to lose the me-first-and-Christ-maybe kind of thinking.

He tells us to give ourselves to Him and discover who we’re meant to be in Him. It’s found in receiving and living out His redemption. (See 2 Corinthians 5:15-17)

And yet, when unbelief collides with what I don’t understand, a faithless space invites me to retreat in fear or indifference.

If you’ve spent time in those spaces too, here’s a peek at where they thrive.

They lurk where my ego is protected.

They love a tame and timid faith.

They lay around in a heart unchanged by God’s grace and truth.

But there is hope.

When we are faithless, God is still faithful. He continues in His pursuit to win our wayward or frightened hearts.

He is our Refuge. (Psalms 62:8)

He longs to free us from the danger of dwelling in a mindset of not trusting Him. He knows such places in the soul become sinful couches where we sit far too long.

And the cost is too high. Instead of being creative, generous, forgiving or authentic, we abandon courage and compromise our character.

I’m glad when safe, faithless spaces are exposed.

Otherwise, procrastination eclipses purpose.

Relationships go unmended.

Spiritual growth is avoided while selfish desires go unchecked.

To be clear, I’m not saying we should put ourselves in harm’s way to prove our spiritual prowess. However, safe, faithless spaces keep us, like the disciples, in a boatload of fear.

Such spaces are not safe at all. They hold booby traps of doubt and pitfalls of disobedience.

With God’s strength, let’s “walk out of every comfort zone and safe, faithless space, even when it’s painful.” I’d much rather live with hope for the heart and joy to the soul.

  1. Ugh…I know I need to hear this message. 🙂 I do routinely have to leave my comfort zones, but I’d rather not. ha. My deal with God is that I’ll show up, if he’ll handle the rest once I get there. So far, he’s kept up his end of the bargain.

Love your insight that some of our safe places aren’t really safe anyway!

    1. Hi Lisa! Yes, this phrasing “safe, faithless spaces” hit me right between the eyes. I’m so grateful for God’s faithfulness!

  2. Thought provoking this afternoon, Joy. Is it safer in the boat or walking on water with Jesus? I have sunk a few times but He is there.

    1. Hi Becky! Great question. Either way — water walking or boat dwelling — I have to remember Jesus is with me in the storm. But between you and I, I’ve always wanted to walk on water! 😊

  3. Thank you for sharing this. It was exactly what I needed reminding of. ❤

    1. Blessings to you as you rely on God’s strength to emerge from faithless spaces!

  4. Never liked comfort zones, I don’t feel Christlike there. I’m the type to tackle things right away and in a comfort zone I don’t feel like myself!

    1. Great way to approach life Liz. You’re one of my sheroes!❤
